Sell Your Home
The most common way to satisfy your reverse mortgage is to sell your home. You may be forced to sell your home in the event you move into a nursing home or into another home. However, there may be other ways for you to satisfy your reverse mortgage without selling your home to pay off the outstanding mortgage balance.
Pay Off With Cash
The firs way to satisfy your reverse mortgage without selling your property is to pay off the reverse mortgage with cash. Many retired individual choose to take out a reverse mortgage because they do not want to have to deal with the tax implications associated with withdrawing from their retirement account. However, eventually the retired individual will be required to make withdrawals. At this point, it may make more sense to pay off their reverse mortgage with cash as opposed to allowing the loan to accrue interest.
Refinance Your Mortgage
The second way to satisfy your reverse mortgage without selling your property is to refinance your mortgage. You could refinance your reverse mortgage with into either a traditional amortizing mortgage or with a home equity line of credit. Unfortunately, as a retired individual you may not have enough reliable income to be approved from a mortgage refinance. However, this strategy may be ideal for your heirs in the event they do not want to sell your home upon your death.
